Sewage Backup Cleanup in Venice

A sewage backup in Venice usually surfaces at the lowest drain on the lot, often a ground-floor shower or the bathroom of a back unit. We contain it, extract it, and clean and disinfect what stays before any drying starts.

What sewage cleanup looks like in Venice

  • The Venice Pumping Plant at 140 Hurricane Street is the largest wastewater pumping plant in Los Angeles; in the 1994-95 and 2004-05 winters its overflow came within minutes of reaching Ballona Lagoon.
  • Abbot Kinney opened Venice of America with its canals in 1905; most were filled in 1929, and six remain: Carroll, Linnie, Howland, Sherman, Eastern and Grand.
  • The canals are tidal, fed through Ballona Lagoon and gates at Washington Boulevard, and were drained and restored in 1992 and 1993.
  • Venice's historic walk streets, such as Marco Place, put front doors on pedestrian paths far from the nearest curb.

Start with who owns the pipe. In the City of Los Angeles, the line that carries sewage from a house to the public main is a private sewer lateral, and LA Sanitation says the property owner is responsible for all of it: the upper lateral from the building to the property line, and the lower lateral from the property line out to the middle of the street. The main belongs to the city. That split tells you who to call. If sewage is coming up inside and the neighbors are fine, the blockage is usually in your lateral and a plumber clears it. If the street is backing up too, the main is involved, and LA Sanitation's 24-hour Customer Care Center needs to hear about it.

LA Sanitation puts tree roots and poured fats, oils and grease behind more than half of all sewer backups. Venice has plenty of both. Many lots carry mature trees whose roots work into the joints of older laterals, and kitchen grease cools and narrows a line one dinner at a time. A storm can finish what the roots and grease started, when a full main has no room for the flow from a lateral that is already half blocked.

LA Sanitation also says that when the lowest plumbing fixture in a building sits lower than the street manhole cover, the property needs a backwater valve, a device that closes to keep sewage in the main from flowing back into the house, and that installing one takes a permit from the Department of Building and Safety. On low Venice lots, a ground-floor shower or a back unit's bathroom can sit close to street grade. If yours backed up, ask your plumber to compare that fixture with the manhole and to check whether a valve exists and still closes. We do not work on lines or valves, but our report records which fixture the sewage came from.

Many Venice lots hold a front house and a back unit, and sewage tends to appear at whichever has the lowest drain, which is not always the one that caused the blockage. We treat each building on the lot as its own area, with separate containment, separate photos, separate category notes and separate drying logs, so the owner, a tenant and any carrier can see exactly where the sewage surfaced and what it reached.

Sewage is Category 3 water, the industry's term for grossly contaminated, and the order of work stays the same however small the bathroom. First the plumber stops the flow, or nothing we clean stays clean. Then we close the room off with plastic sheeting and negative air through HEPA filtration, set one entry point, and pull up the liquid with extraction equipment. Bath mats, rugs, carpet and pad, mattresses and cardboard boxes that soaked it up are photographed, then bagged inside the room. Hard surfaces are cleaned, then disinfected at the product's full contact time. Only after that do air movers and dehumidifiers go in, and we take readings every day until the floor and walls reach a dry standard.

Walk streets and canal paths change how waste leaves the house. Everything that comes out of a sewage room is sealed in bags before it crosses a living space and is carried by hand to the nearest curb, so we plan the route before the first bag is filled. Nothing gets rinsed into a yard, a storm drain or a canal, because the water around Venice carries what reaches it. In May 2024, about 14,400 gallons of untreated sewage spilled into Ballona Creek, and the county extended the closure from Dockweiler to Venice Beach when a swell threatened to carry it north, CBS Los Angeles reported.

Before we arrive, stop running water anywhere on the lot, including the other unit, because every flush and shower drains toward the same blockage. Keep children, pets and anyone pregnant, elderly or with a weak immune system out of the building. Close the door to the affected room and leave the fans off. If sewage reached a rug or a couch, leave it in place for photos rather than dragging it across the floor. Write down when it started and which fixture it came from, because your plumber and your carrier will both ask.

For the paperwork, we record the source, the category, the rooms and materials affected, the cleaning and disinfection performed and the daily drying readings, and we estimate our own scope. We can bill your carrier directly for our services. Sewer backup coverage is often a separate endorsement, and whether you carry it is your carrier's call, or a question for your agent or a public adjuster. Our technicians hold IICRC certifications in water damage restoration and applied microbial remediation, and the first inspection is free.

Questions about sewage cleanup in Venice

Have a question that is not answered here? Call any hour, or ask for a callback.

Who is responsible for the sewer pipe under the street in front of my Venice house?

In the City of Los Angeles, the owner is. LA Sanitation says the private lateral runs from your building to the middle of the street, upper and lower sections both, and the owner keeps it clear. The public main beyond that is the city's.

Does a Venice house need a backwater valve?

LA Sanitation says one is required when the lowest plumbing fixture sits lower than the street manhole cover, and installing it takes a permit from Building and Safety. A plumber can compare your lowest drain with the manhole and check any valve you already have.

Sewage came up in our back unit but the front house is fine. Do you clean both?

We clean what the sewage reached and check the rest. Each building on the lot gets its own containment, photos and readings, so the record shows where it surfaced and that the other building stayed clear, or where it did not.
