On Friday, October 9, 2026, surf from Tropical Storm Rachel came over the bulkhead and the boardwalk on the Alamitos Peninsula. Homes on parts of Seaside Walk were ordered evacuated, crews ran portable pumps to clear seawater out of houses and streets, and by the weekend city inspectors had red-tagged eight buildings covering thirteen addresses. The city reported roughly thirty feet of bulkhead damage between 65th and 66th Place. If your building is standing and the city has cleared it to enter, the next few days decide how much of it you keep.
None of this came out of nowhere. A USGS coastal geologist has described the Peninsula as a reclaimed estuary, and Naples and Belmont Shore sit close to zero elevation. In July 2026, months before Rachel, a high tide and a fresh swell pushed ocean water over the sand berms and across the boardwalk onto front porches. On Naples Island, king tides have pushed water up through the ground behind the canal seawalls and onto the walkways without ever topping the wall. Water finds these neighborhoods from the ocean side, the bay side and from below.
That changes how a Long Beach flood job starts. Seawater that has crossed a boardwalk, a street and a storm drain is grossly contaminated from the first minute, so the first work is containment, extraction and disinfection, not fans. Carpet and pad, upholstered furniture, mattresses and soaked insulation usually cannot be disinfected and saved. Hard surfaces that stay get cleaned before any drying equipment goes in, because drying a contaminated room just locks the contamination into the building.
Salt adds its own problem. Water that has evaporated out of a wall leaves the salt behind, and salt keeps pulling moisture out of the air, so a wall that looked dry in week one can read damp again in week three. We take moisture readings at the start, log them every day while the equipment runs, and do not call a room dry until the readings say so. You get those readings in writing, which is the record a flood claim or a buyer's inspection will ask for later.
Long Beach housing near the water is a mix of beach cottages, duplexes and small apartment buildings, and a lot of it is rented or owned by someone who does not live there. When a ground-floor unit takes water, the unit upstairs and the one next door usually need to be checked too, because water travels under flooring and through shared walls out of sight. We document each unit separately, by unit number, so an owner, a property manager and a carrier are all looking at the same record.
Insurance is where most people get surprised. FEMA states that standard homeowner policies do not cover flood damage, and ocean water coming in over a bulkhead is flood. A separate flood policy, through the National Flood Insurance Program or a private insurer, is what normally answers for it, and many Peninsula homes carry one because of their flood zone. Coverage questions belong to your carrier, your agent or a public adjuster you hire. We document the loss, estimate our own scope of work, and can bill your carrier directly for our services.
Not every Long Beach call is the ocean. The same week brought heavy rain from Rachel's remnants, which means roof leaks, wet ceilings and overflowing drains in neighborhoods nowhere near the sand. We respond anywhere in Los Angeles, Orange County and Riverside around the clock, our technicians hold IICRC certifications in water damage restoration and applied microbial remediation, and we work in English and Spanish. The first inspection is free.
