Riverside's big floods come off the Santa Ana River. In January and February 1969, two storm periods produced peaks on the river at Riverside higher than any in the previous thirty one years. January brought nearly nine inches of rain to the city, February fell on ground that was already saturated, and flood damage across the county came to about $15 million. The river is far better controlled today, but the pattern of rain on saturated ground still drives the worst storm losses.
The river still floods in big storms. In February 2024, during an atmospheric river, crews rescued ten people and eighteen dogs from the Santa Ana River bottom. For homes, the more common storm problem is local: rain overwhelming gutters and yard drains, water against a foundation, and runoff into garages and lower rooms. Water from outside is contaminated by the time it gets in, and it gets cleaned and disinfected before any drying starts.
Riverside's older neighborhoods need a particular kind of care. The Wood Streets have Craftsman homes dating to 1912 and 1914, and the city has blocks of bungalows and period houses from the decades after. Homes that age often sit on raised foundations with original wood floors and plaster walls, and some still carry older drain lines. Water under a raised floor sits in the crawlspace out of sight, and plaster holds moisture longer than drywall, so we read the structure rather than trusting how it looks.
Newer tract homes on the edges of the city fail differently. Supply lines under slabs, water heaters in garages, washing machine hoses and air conditioning drain lines that back up during long hot stretches are the usual calls. Those start as clean water, and the job is speed: extraction, then drying with daily logged readings. Federal guidance says to dry water damage within 24 to 48 hours if possible, because materials that stay wet longer usually grow mold.
Riverside is also a city of renters and landlords, and a water loss in a duplex or apartment rarely stays in one unit. We check the units around the leak, keep a separate photo and moisture record for each, and coordinate access around tenants.
Smoke and fire calls come with the region too. A house near a brush fire can carry smoke and ash in the attic, the ducts and the closets without any flame reaching it. Photograph it before anyone cleans and get it assessed while the evidence is still there.
Riverside summers bring their own leak. Many homes here run evaporative coolers on the roof, and a cooler with a failed float, a cracked pan or a loose supply line can run water into the attic for days before a ceiling stains. Air conditioning condensate lines back up the same way during long hot stretches. By the time a stain shows, the insulation above it is usually soaked. We take readings in the attic and the ceiling, get the wet insulation out, and dry the framing until it reads dry. Shut the cooler's water supply off at the valve as soon as you see a stain, and do not run it again until the pan and float have been checked.
On insurance, we document the loss, estimate our own scope of work, and can bill your carrier directly for our services. FEMA states that standard homeowner policies do not cover flood, so water from outside is normally a separate flood policy question. Coverage questions belong to your carrier, your agent or a public adjuster you hire. We respond anywhere in Riverside, Los Angeles and Orange County around the clock, our technicians hold IICRC certifications, we work in English and Spanish, and the first inspection is free.
